Artistic Director
Martin Sládeček was born in Frýdek-Místek under the sign of Gemini in 1989.
He studied theatre dramaturgy at the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno in the studio of Professor Václav Cejpek. After educational stays at the Mozarteum University Salzburg in Austria and at the Czech Centre in Berlin, in 2015, during his studies, he took up the position of a dramaturge of plays at the National Theatre in Brno, led by director Martin Františák. It was at the Mahen Theatre, on the larger of the two stages for plays at the National Theatre, that he also made his debut as an author, with the play Otvírání studánek [The Opening of the Wells] by Alfred Radok, directed by J. A. Pitínský. In 2017, he accepted an offer of work from Doda Gombár, who was then artistic director of the Prague theatre Švandovo divadlo. Martin Sládeček worked there as a dramaturge until he joined Goose on a String Theatre. As a dramaturge, he has many productions and international theatre projects to his name, and he is also an author of plays, dramatizations and translations of dramatic texts. He is the winner of the Salzburg State Prize (Der Salzburgpreis) 2012 and the Evald Schorm Prize 2013.
If he wasn’t a dramaturge, he would probably be a social worker. He’d like to be a super-activist, but his super-shyness would get in the way. When he’s not working and not reading, he’s playing sports. When, one day, he stops working, reading and playing sports, he’s going to learn all the languages of the world. He joined the String in 2019.
