Anna Davidová was born into a family of artists in Brno under the sign of Taurus in 1984. She spent her high school years in Polička, before going on to study play directing in the studio of Peter Mikulík at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava. She graduated in 2008 with the productions Hedda Gabler and Casablanca. Even her first works on the professional stage attracted attention for their vitality, dreamy imagery and atmosphere, and she soon became one of the most outstanding talents of her generation. In 2010, she was nominated for the DOSKY award for her production of Nora at the Košice State Theatre. She was also nominated twice for the Alfred Radok Award in the Talent of the Year category, and in 2014 she won the award, which had been renamed the Theatre Critics’ Award. Today, she has a long list of successful collaborations with illustrious Czech and Slovak theatres behind her. She has worked with the Prague theatres Dejvické divadlo, Divadlo Na zábradlí, and Švandovo divadlo, the Slovak National Theatre, the National Theatre in Brno, the Moravian-Silesian National Theatre, the Klicper Theatre in Hradec Králové, Hadivadlo, the Petr Bezruč Theatre, the City Theatre of Zlín, and Slovácko Theatre to name but a few. The scope of her work is remarkably wide, ranging from more intimate productions for small theatres (the Masopust theatre company, Studio Rubín, etc.) to Mozart's opera Cosi fan tutte, which she directed at the National Theatre in Brno in 2018, at the invitation of Jiří Heřman. She collaborated regularly with Goose on a String Theatre before she took up the post of artistic director, beginning in 2012. She created the production Tichý Tarzan (the purloined diaries of a shadowy figure of erotic photography) P-Š-T! aneb Pohádkáři, Fidlowačka aneb Kde domov můj, and the acclaimed Vitka in 2018. Anna Davidová also collaborated with Czech Radio in Brno as a director and taught at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava. She joined the String as Artistic Director in 2019, returning as Director in the 2024/25 season after maternity leave. If she hadn’t done so, she’d most likely still be flitting between the nation’s theatres, whereas now she can finally devote her energies to one theatre company, one public, and one city. Above all else, she loves her family, and this life-giving elixir allows her to be in three places at once.
